Windows Service Pack 2 apparently breaks SPS2003SP2

This is a Microsoft article that describes the problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B934229&x=17&y=12

From the previous article:

"In a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal site, you click Add Link to Site on the Sites page to add a new link to the Site Directory. On the "Add Link to Site" page, you specify the information that you want for the new link. Then, you click either OK or Cancel. In this scenario, the "Add Link to Site" page stops responding. Additionally, the link is not added to the Site Directory"

For now thre is no a patch.

This is a work around:

  • Create a new site from SiteDirectory Area (page /_layouts//scsignup.aspx)
  • you are redirect to the page /SiteDirectory/Lists/Siti/NewForm.aspx (italian url.... I guess /SiteDirectory/Lists/Sites/NewForm.aspx in English installation). This page don't work so you can't create a listing in a area for this wss site and can't choose stie template, but the wss site was created.
  • Type this url: /sites/ and you will be redirect to /sites//_layouts//templatepick.aspx. So you can choose the site template.
  • in order to create a listing of type Site for this new wss site in a area, you can go to the area manage content page and enter in the listings list. Click the action button for add a new listing. The page url is something like this: /_layouts//spnewlisting.aspx? CatID=. Modify this url in this way: /_layouts//spnewlisting.aspx?mode=site&CatID= reload the page.... et voilĂ : you can create a listing of tipe Site. :-)
